Phil Godenschwager Retrospective

Chandler Center for the Arts presents Bringing It All Together: From Then to Now, a retrospective celebrating the wide-ranging career of Vermont artist Phil “Flip” Godenschwager. The exhibition opens with a public reception on Saturday, July 25, 2026, from 5 to 7 PM and remains on view through Sunday, September 6, the closing weekend of the 34th Annual New World Festival. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 12 to 5 PM. Admission is free.

Spanning decades of Godenschwager’s work, the exhibition features a six-sided glass gazebo, a whimsical white house-themed putting green, three-dimensional sculptures, detailed ink drawings rooted in cartooning and illustration, and photographs of several large-scale public installations. Together, the works demonstrate his unusual creative range, technical skill, and ability to combine craftsmanship with humor and social commentary.

Godenschwager is a multidisciplinary artist whose work encompasses stained glass, sculpture, murals, graphic design, carpentry, and cartoon-inspired art. Raised around the world in a military family, he began painting at age eight in the Philippines and later developed his drawing skills in Greece. He earned an MFA in glass sculpture in 1993 and has operated Atlantic Art, Glass and Design in Randolph since 1988. His major projects include the animated clock tower created for FAO Schwarz and featured in the film Big, Window to the Rails at the O. Winston Link Museum, The Waterbury Special, and stained glass commissions for the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery and Burlington Public Works Department.

Godenschwager will also lead two public artist talks exploring his creative process, major works, and the ideas connecting his varied career. Serendipity: The Life of an Artist will take place on Saturday, August 8, at 4 PM, followed by Art of Place: Shaping Randolph on Saturday, August 22, at 4 PM.
